Rescue, Shelter or Sanctuary?

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

In Britain, 1824 (almost 200 years ago) a compassionate group of women formed the very first animal rescue ever. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - over 50 years before women could even vote! This laid the foundation for a shift in people’s perspective about animals and paved the way for so much good to happen!

As I was reading this captivating history, I realized I did not have my vocabulary correct -

I have used the words Rescue / Shelter / Sanctuary interchangeably, not understanding they have such extremely different meanings! I found this very interesting and wanted to share:

  • Animal Rescue: provides rescue and placement of animals into permanent homes

  • Animal Shelter: provides a temporary home for adoptable animals and euthanizes animals that have been deemed unsuitable for adoption

  • Animal Sanctuary: provides a permanent home for unwanted, abused or neglected animals

I love that a small group of women has made such a powerful, long lasting difference for those that cannot speak - I hope you find this as inspiring as I do. YOU can continue this legacy by sponsoring an animal, keep the circle going, the animals thank you.
