The Power of Sanctuary: It Starts With One

Sometimes big change starts very small.

In 1986, a sheep named Hilda was rescued—and that single act helped launch what is considered America's first farm animal sanctuary.

Forty years later, hundreds of sanctuaries have become part of a growing movement built around a simple idea: every animal deserves kindness, safety and the chance to be known as an individual.

But here's something we love even more.

Sanctuaries don't only change the lives of the animals who call them home.

They change people, too.

At one of the country's largest farm animal sanctuaries, humane education programs have reached more than 250,000 students since 2017. Children are learning that cows have personalities. Pigs form friendships. Chickens communicate. Animals play, learn, remember and form meaningful social bonds.

And sometimes all it takes to change someone's perspective is meeting just one.

A child discovers just how enormous—and gentle—Moo Puppy really is.

Someone sits quietly while a formerly frightened cat decides to come closer.

Suddenly, an animal isn't simply a cow, pig or cat anymore.

They're someone.

That's the quiet power of sanctuary.

We may never know how far one rescued life, one visit, one story or one act of compassion will travel.

But forty years of sanctuary history reminds us of something pretty wonderful:
