Things That Go Bump in the Barn

Sir Bill heard it first.

A thump.

He lifted his head.

Another thump.

Gentle Mike opened one eye from his resting place.

“Something is in the barn,” Sir Bill announced.

Gentle Mike considered this. Technically, many things were in the barn, including several cats and Sir Bill himself. He decided not to point this out.

THUMP.

Now everyone was listening.

The Gentlefolk assembled. Cally watched from a safe distance. The newer orange member of the colony wisely stayed out of whatever foolishness was about to occur.

Sir Bill crept toward the sound.

Gentle Mike followed.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

They rounded the corner.

And there it was.

A terrifying intruder.

A nearly empty feed bucket had tipped onto its side and was rolling slightly each time the autumn wind found its way through the barn.

Sir Bill stared at it.

Gentle Mike stared at Sir Bill.

No one spoke.

Sir Bill calmly turned around and walked away, apparently satisfied that his investigation had saved Pleasant Pasture from certain disaster.

Gentle Mike returned to his nap.

Because life in a sanctuary barn isn't always dramatic.

But when you're a cat with an imagination, even an empty bucket can make an October night interesting.

Happy Halloween from the Gentlefolk of Pleasant Pasture.
